Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground is a limited edition 10-inch blue vinyl from the trio of Samuel Blaser (trombone), Marc Ducret (guitar), and Peter Bruun (drums), recorded live at Wincraft Music Studios in the Cotswolds during their 2023 UK tour. The album opens with Blind Willie Johnson's timeless title piece, whose themes of longing and isolation the trio inhabit with quiet authority, before moving through six original compositions by Ducret and Blaser. Captured by James Towler and mastered by Stefan Heger, the record traces a path from reverence to invention, from a century-old blues lament to the freely improvised closing piece "Jam," where the three musicians follow the music wherever it leads. Intimate in format, generous in spirit.
