Samuel Blaser (trombone)

18 monologues élastiques takes its name from Dix-neuf poèmes élastiques, the landmark collection by Blaise Cendrars, the Swiss-born modernist poet who grew up around the corner from Blaser in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Less a tribute than a wink, the album is a collection of solo trombone improvisations recorded at the former DDR Radio Studios in Berlin: seriously playful, unrepeatable, and as resistant to category as Cendrars himself. The trombone, uniquely mimetic, gives voice here to an entire world at once.

  • A true fireworks display of everything the trombone allows: clarity of playing, full and round sound, supple articulation, technical mastery, inventiveness, and humor.

Culture Jazz, Jean Buzelin, May 2026

  • Explores the extreme possibilities of the instrument through rapid glissandi, multiphonics, and physical percussions. Between contemporary music, postmodern jazz, and sound art.

Il Manifesto, guido michelone, April 2026

  • These monologues are even more unique. He recorded the album while walking throughout multiple acoustically-designed areas in Berlin's famous Funkhaus studio complex... the building's spatial qualities are also adapted to the creation.

    Jazzword, Ken Waxman, March 2026

  • Imagine how it is improvising with nothing but three valves, a manipulating slide and a body tube. But that's what Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser does.

The Whole Note, Ken Waxman, March 2026

  • Technique of excellence and inspiration go hand in hand, there is nothing academic or forcedly virtuosic, and the tracks connect, despite their extreme diversity, with soft naturalness.

    Blowup, Piercarlo Poggio, November 2025

  • Samuel Blaser as the non-conformist trombonist who juggles sound, space, and movement.

Jazzhalo, Georges Tonla Briquet, November 2025

  • No flowing melodies, but sketches, impressions, glissandi, and above all well-considered playfulness.

Jazzmania, Georges Tonla Briquet, November 2025

  • Both an artistic statement and a cultural homage

    Impronta de Jazz, September 2025

  • What a stroke of genius.

    JazzMa, Hegedüs Zsuzsanna, October 2025

  • Here's another to add to their number alongside Mangelsdorff, George Lewis, and Paul Rutherford. A hugely varied and enthralling release, highly recommended.

Jazz Journal, Andy Hamilton, October 2025

  • A collection of sound and surprise, seriously playful, a modernist's answer, unrepeatable, to another puzzling question.

Salt Peanuts, Eyal Hareuveni, October 2025

  • A one-of-a-kind listening experience.

  • We knew he was capable of almost anything with a slide, but not at this level of abstraction and experimentation.

    Citizenjazz, Franpi, September 2020

  • An act of discovery rather than a simple improvisation.

    Jazztimes, Shaun Brady, September 2020

  • A magnificent solo recorded in the former GDR studios in Berlin.

    Jazzmania, Jean-Pierre Goffin, August 2020

  • A veritable map of the musician's psyche.

All About Jazz, Doug Colette, December 2020
